I always thought a portmanteau was a word formed from the combination of other words. I've never heard it used to refer to luggage, though I suppose that might be the etymology.

[up][up] As applied to luggage, it's a portmanteau of "portable", which luggage is, and "mantle", which is where you keep it. Little-known fact.

It is both. Humpty Dumpty explains how a portmanteau is a trunk put together from two halves, and it becomes a metaphor.

Humpty Dumpty also makes up words and uses them to mean whatever the heck he wants.

[up] Well, yeah, that's how words come into existence.

Did you think the etymological stork brought them?

Well, fine. I'll start my own shadow organization. With blackjack. And hookers.

I'll call it the National Alliance to Make Better Learned Acronyms.

I'm pretty sure this thread is a flower rite attacking the concept of Acronyms.

There is an Excrucian around here, I just know it.

No, she's the etymology stork.

If you watched the rest of the scene you'd know she's actually a dodo.

I wish dodos were still alive. They were probably delicious.

[up][up][up] Don't be silly, there's an etymological stork for each language. A new one hatches every time a pair of twins make up a secret code to speak to each other, or an isolated group of British colonists diverge from classical English to produce a twisted dialect that can't even spell or pronounce "aluminium" properly.

[up][up] Dodos were close relatives of the etymological stork. It took them a while to notice, but they got really angry about the extinction, and that's where text-culture spelling comes from.

Do you think Equestria has dodos? It has manticores and hyras after all.

But dodos are real.

Well, they were.

Equestria did have dodos but then it turned out they were the most delicious animal ever and the ponies ate them all.

Yeah, they were so delicious even herbivores wanted to eat them.

@Story: Well, it has ponies. No reason why dodos couldn't be around. Maybe they really are as stupid as implied.

This here is arguably my favourite episode of the show: "Sisterhooves Social". I guess it's comparable to "Look Before You Sleep". It is a Rarity episode, but I would argue that it's a Sweetie Belle episode, too.

Did you know that some sources claim that Sweetie Belle is an excellent baker, and that she's the youngest of the group? I believe this episode disproves the excellent baker claim. Besides, I'm not sure that she's the youngest filly in the Cutie Mark Crusaders.

Let me tell you, my heart was really going out to poor Sweetie Belle. She was just trying to be helpful. I can understand that disrupting your workspace does not produce a good mood, but Rarity didn't have to flip out like that. Still, Sweetie showed just how much of a Deadpan Snarker she can be, and just how brutal her "The Reason You Suck" Speech can be, didn't she?

Rarity has been compared to Scarlett O'Hara from Gone with the Wind. I just wish Scarlett's kids told her off for her neglectful, unmotherly behaviour!

Anyway, Apple Bloom and Applejack seem to have a much improved relationship between them. Still, it was interesting how AJ was saying, "Well, actually, I...." Maybe she was trying to communicate to Sweetie that she's not that great of a sister? By the way, that was fantastic, the way AJ and AB defined the word "uncouth"! [lol]

When Sweetie and Rarity were reporting the moral of story, I did find myself wondering if Princesses Celestia and Luna have a relationship comparable to theirs. I guess we'll never know for sure! sad

[up][up] A-hoy-hoy.

Sparkly stickies.

One of these is sort of like the others.

@Story: If it doesn't have dodos, how did any member of the CMC know what they were?
