Maybe when Foil! Twilight arrives, they start befriending the others. Before, they were nobodies, but together, they are FOIL! MANE CAST!

That could another difference between them. Foil! Twi has ALWAYS understood the importance of friendship. Maybe they even tried to befriend Twi back at school.

Which might explain her previous anti-socialness.

Edit: Screw it, Japanese teeth's idea is better. They visit this town, run into Foil! Twilight, who sort of mocks Twilight, then introduces the mane cast to the others. Foil! Twi could be a prefect example of a friendly enemy.

I think the foils shouldn't be rivals, so much as mirrors. The mane cast shouldn't try to compete with them at first, but try to befriend them, and fail miserably. Hopefully the foils and the mane cast will just go their separate ways and not bother each other.
