Fluttershy during ''Best Night Ever''. I mean W.T.F?! She wants to play with the animals, and they run away from her, but instead of going about it the usual way she escalates into Willy E. Coyote levels of insanity almost immediately. In the next episode (the season 2 pilot) Discord has to forcibly Mind Rape her, because there's almost no evil in the girl.

She was fed up because she was failing at something that she's normally really good at.

Cute trick with the frosting tail on that last one.

Why would she be using frosting and a microphone at once? Singing baking songs?

@Sinclair: I think it's because Discord was trying to get her to believe that her friends didn't like her because she was weak; her breakdown when confronted with the animals didn't really have anything to do with that. Her breakdown in "Best Night Ever" was when the animals (in her perception at least) didn't like her, when Discord's attempted Mind Rape consisted of him trying to get her to believe that her friends didn't like her, when she knew that wasn't the case.

That and he was trying to appeal to FS's pride over an issue that she really didn't have any pride about: "That's okay. I am weak and helpless."

Her ability to connect with animals, though, that she has pride in.

Poor Applejack. She's not nearly as strong and competent as she tries to be. Poor girl couldn't even harvest the apples in Applebuck season.

It's just humiliating when all your best effort is insufficient to do a job that you should be able to do.

@ATC: I don't follow your logic there.

You're saying a single pony should be able to harvest an entire orchard of apples on their own?

@ATC She harvested at least 2/3 of a vast orchard on her own. Frankly, that's incredible. No pony could possibly do the whole thing on their own, and she still managed to do most of it herself. What makes you think that she or anypony else could have done it better?

@ATC: That's like saying that Pinkie should singlehandedly bake for everypony in town or that Rarity should be able completely restock her shop singehandedly on a daily basis. There's no reason to believe that she's weak because she can't finish a job that's far more than any single pony would be able to handle under normal circumstances. There's no indication that anypony would be able to do something of that magnitude on their own. The only character that could do better is probably Big Macintosh.

Well, she gave it her all, went without sleep for a long, long time, and she still failed at something she thought she could do.

Twilight managed to pick up three barrels worth of apples at once, so I assume that she could probably pull it off.

I assume that AJ wouldn't try to do something that she knew was impossible, I assume that she legitimately thought it was within her capabilities.

So? She overestimated herself. That was the whole point. Nopony could have done it. Twilight's massive spells are extremely taxing on her. She could never have pulled it off.

...Pretty every single character in the show has failed at something they thought they could do at some point. Just because AJ overestimated her own ability doesn't mean that she's bad at what she's doing. The entire point of the episode was that attempting to harvest the whole thing without help was obviously way out of anypony's ability, and the fact that she got as far as she did is pretty impressive. It's like saying Pinkie's a bad baker because she doesn't bake every single item in Sugarcube Corner herself. Nopony expects that to even be possible.

It also doesn't take into account that she was coming in fresh; she might only be able to do that a few times before exhausting herself. Not to mention that it's implied that the rest of the cast didn't exactly do the rest of the harvest instantaneously; AJ is still the most efficient worker.

Of course she wouldn't, but she is also known for being quite prideful and tends to overestimate her abilities.

And again overestimating one's own abilities doesn't equate to being incompetent in that area. AJ is still probably better at harvesting than pretty much anyone else; she just overestimated exactly how competent.

I'm somewhat bemused by the implication that going without sleep was a good thing, when during her actual screen time it was probably the single thing slowing her down the most next to Big Mac's injury - bucking the same tree repeatedly, that sort of thing. Working twice as much at 30% efficiency is still bad compared to working the normal amount at 100%.
