Is there a trope that matches the intent of 'Completely missing the point' anymore? Because I'd say that Darker and Edgier 'Comedically' missing the point of Friendship Is Magic kind of...well...Misses the Point. :-/

Eh, badly-done darkfics aren't worth it. Good ones like FOE are actually pretty cool tho.

^^I don't really follow you. They just miss the point entirely seriously, as far as I can tell... which is disturbing as all hell.

^Well, Fallout Equestria is grimdark for a reason. Shit like Cupcakes and Sweet Apple Massacre aren't worth their electrons.

Fallout Equestria. It might be grimdark, but the concepts of friendships and the flawed protagonists trying to make a better world out of the crapsack Wasteland somehow seem fitting for a Bad Future for Equestria.

[up][up] I'm talking about how the trope you linked to is "Comedically Missing The Point", which despite having the alternative name of 'Completely Missing the Point', doesn't seem to fit the idea based on the description of the trope.

My point was, as Red Savant pointed out exactly, was that the Dark Fic and Adult fan content produced from this show misses the point of what it's trying to get across in a serious and disturbing manner.* And I don't that Comedically Missing The Point, at least as it's described now, fits with that idea, even though I'm guessing you were aiming for the more serious alternative.

  • And, if you ask me, I think that such content completely contradicts the 'love and tolerate' messages that I had the impression was one of the things that helped get this show such a big initial fanbase.

I've never been a fan of Dark Fic in general, unless the original work was also grimdark. Not that I think it can't be well written, but when you have stories about Big Mac killing his sister or whatever the characters and setting are just so different that it just doesn't feel like an MLP story. It's like, if you're going to basically toss out all the characterization and tone of the original work, why are you bothering to write fic about it at all? It's like reading an original work that just happens to have the same character and place names. What's the point in producing fan work if it doesn't even resemble thing it's based on?

Then again, my overall approach to fanfic is to change only what's necessary for the story and stick to canon as much as possible otherwise, so I might just be biased.

[up][up]Oh I see. I shouldn't have ptholed the trople, what I mean was mean to be taken literally. Not by the trope's article, sorry for the confusion.

Bleh, all the Dark Fic and "Adult" content the fandom creates from this show makes me wish that this show had fewer fans than it does currently.
You gotta take Pinkie Pie's advice and giggle at the ghosties. I think it's cute that some folks think the only response to something cheery and optimistic is to try and "mature it up" with grim 'n gritty — it's like watching an eleven-year-old douse himself in Axe body spray because he thinks that will make him a chick magnet. wink

(As far as I'm concerned, after Pinkie Pie read Cupcakes, she couldn't stop laughing for a whole week over how silly the premise was...)

[up][up][up][up][up] Exactly.

I'd kind of like to see a spoof Dark Fic sometime that turns them all into ludicrously over the top 90's-style Dark Age superheroes with silly names and millions of pouches. Twilight is obviously enforcing the genre tropes thanks to stumbling across a book called "The Collected Works of Rob Liefeld".

Applejack: An' how'm I s'posed ta use these?
Twilight: Use your...um...er...
Pinkie: I have an eyepatch! Yarr! I'm a pirate!

I kind of miss the old timeslot. I liked watching the show in the evening, even if it was crappy and The Hub didn't seem fond of it.

Also, I like twisting the show. Usually by making Celestia a tyrant who tends to show up in Twilight's library to reprimand her for the strangest things and distorting the characters.

Well, I'm trying to write a fic that includes Johan of all people, so I have nothing against twisting the world into something darker.

Usually I try to end optimistically though, That's just the kinda guy I am. [lol]

re: Darkfics and Rule 34:

Don't like? Don't watch.

If you don't pay attention to it, it won't harm your enjoyment. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

However, I agree that many of the darkfics are really misguided and poorly thought out.

If darkfic is carefully thought out, well plotted, and comes up with some kind of decent justification, I can respect it even if I don't necessarily enjoy it.

If it can be summarised with the phrase "[insert character here] becomes a psychotic serial killer FOR NO RAISIN", then you should stay away.

Well, I think some of us see potential directions the characters could be headed that just seem to have some darker implications. I don't write darker stuff for the sake of writing it. I go where my muse takes me and that tends to be a little more mature than the show (I tend to write adventure and the darker stuff is more of a side effect). I'd like to think the fic I'm working on is worth reading through the darker parts (that are required to take the story's execution to its fullest potential) to see what I've come up for elaboration on the lore, but that could just be my ego talking. *shrug*

And let's be honest here, while the show never actually says "die, " the girls have faced the threat of death (or worse... petrified Twi anyone?) more than once.

I'm not sure if it is strawman or serious.

I'm with Picard.
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

On the subject of Dark Fics, I can certainly respect them if they are well-written. Namely, keeping characters in-character. However, I agree that Dark Fics pretty much miss the point of MLP entirely.

I do, however, enjoy Fallout Equestria. Mostly because I love Fallout and I love MLP.
