I'm pretty sure Twi is mentally ill.

Re: Kyler's Survey

I found out about it on Know Your Meme, so, if it had generated as many memes as it had as a Western Animation Show, then probably.

@Ace She probably has some kind of anxiety disorder too.

If it was anime I would have watched it anyways. Right now the Japanese are enjoying it too :D

Maybe Takara might license it for viewing there since they have a Thing with Hasbro as a regional partner or something like that. And yes, the most popular characters in Japan are Big Mac, Fluttershy, Twi, Rarity, Cheerilee, and the CMC :3

@Dalek: With all the nearly-G1 levels of disaster that seem to strike every few episodes, I classify her some of her anxiety as being Properly Paranoid. Of course, freaking out over Celestia's homework is a little extreme, but most of us students know that feel.

@Mars: Oh, that's an old one. Still like it though.

@Ace: Oh! I didn't know Rarity was popular in Japan too.

@Ed: It's her work ethic, among other things. The otaku just love their Bishoujo archetypes (Twi is the Good Girl classmate, Fluttershy is the Yamato Nadeshiko, Rarity is totally the Ojou, and Dashie is often subbed as a Bokuko and is also a tomboy)

That sounds about right.

I knew about the rest of the characters you listed, but I think this is the first time Rarity has cropped up, at least in my experience.

Maxiburger's Tumblr covers a lot of the commentary and is a great insight into the Japanese reaction to our Little Ponies.

I heard somewhere that the nutty Russians don't like Rarity.

@Dalek: Maybe the commie Russians, but maybe they just dislike her bourgeois ways.

http://everfreeradio.com/?p=2411

Joshua Walker already had some really good points in that Everfree Radio article. But if you’re asking my personal opinion… I’d say it’s

  1. The cuteness of Lauren Faust’s designs
    • Never underestimate the power of Kawaii. Cuteness is a much more cemented thing in Japanese culture than in ours. For example you don’t really hear men call stuff “cute” in our society (at least not irl), in Japan on the other hand it’s even one of the main desirable attributes in a woman. Of course they share our views on what can be considered “sexy” too. But either way, the cuteness mania is reflected in their fashion, product designs, mascot genre and pretty much all media. And you can’t deny that the Fi M designs are more kawaii than those from earlier Pony generations.
  2. The characters fall into Japanese archetypes
    • Or really, moe-types… Rainbow is a KY bokukko, Fluttershy is the perfect Yamato Nadeshiko and Applejack is an ikemen onee-san. Studious yet socially awkward Twilight certainly appeals to Japanese culture just as much as (oft forgotten) Rarity with her grown-up working morale and designing prowess. On the other hand, brash and loud Pinkie doesn’t seem to click that well with them… unless she switches into Yandere mode. The fact that the show is set in a fantasy world without clear nationalities probably helps them to identify with the characters too.
  3. Good Voice acting
    • Japan loves good voice acting. MLP has some really good voice actors.
  4. Exploitability
    • Japan seems to be even keener than the West when it comes to creating derivative works. So any sort of ambiguous line of dialogue or weird shot has the potential to boost a work’s popularity if processed through fanarts or fanvids. Of course this also holds true in the West, and we’ve pretty much already done all of the possible homework. I’d even suggest that some of our fanart encouraged a number of Japanese watchers to give the show a try. Especially the gijinka versions. Very possibly the porn too.

And they like Applejack because she's part of the proletariat...? On the other hand, she is also exceedingly American. tongue

@Ace of Scarabs: Maybe I'm being cynical/prejudice in this assertion, but what does it always seem like Japanese fans of anything seem far more concerned about a character falling into an "appealing" archetype then actually being well rounded?

[up]Well that's not exclusive to Japan, I mean we are on wiki that's all about categorizing fictional things.tongue

I don't know. "Moe" is a concept that has both confused and annoyed me, and by applying it to ponies I think the Japanese audience is doing the series a real disservice.

@Mio: I don't quite follow it either, because the concept of moe as the Japanese otaku tend to define is usually more "monochrome" than what we usually prefer too.

@Mio: We all have our ways of pigeonholing and stereotyping things, and that's theirs I guess. It's probably just simpler to explain the characters in terms of archetypes rather than go into a detailed analysis, especially if they are talking to people who don't really care about the show.
