I'd imagine Luna actually brute-forces all the games — Celestia just pairs up her opponents in her head and plays their moves against each other for lulz.
Luna still plays mostly with old-fashioned strategies, but she's really, really good. Celestia tends to use more modern tactics when she's the opponent, and her skill stems from her knowledge of her opponents.
I wonder what the history of Equestrian Chess would be like?
Knights are still horse heads apparently. Which is actually rather appropriate.
