If it's one of the Apples it'd probably be both by default. Presumably that one is playing someone else in the house while they're all snowed in.

Rarity would probably have learned it to blend in with high society pseudointellectual types.

Fluttershy would either be mediocre, or it'd be one of her random savant things that she just destroys everypony at out of nowhere.

I imagine Trixie would be at least pretty good at chess, and the Flim-Flams would totally make an automatic chess engine.

There was one in a /fic/ contest a while ago. Luna crashed it incognito.

I can see a Flim-Flam chess engine being not exactly up to Deep Blue level, seeing how they're running the whole steampunk thing

Deep Blue ran on 30 120mhz main processors and 480 specialized chips, but it's woefully outclassed by modern chess programs that can run on smartphones because newer chess programs are smarter.

I'm half-expecting the Flim-Flam chess engine to be a fraud with Flim or Flam inside it

They wouldn't be too shabby at chess though.

They tend to run their longer games at daily sessions, a couple hours at a time.

I'd imagine Luna actually brute-forces all the games — Celestia just pairs up her opponents in her head and plays their moves against each other for lulz.

Luna still plays mostly with old-fashioned strategies, but she's really, really good. Celestia tends to use more modern tactics when she's the opponent, and her skill stems from her knowledge of her opponents.

@Kegi: There's a significant statue that resembles a Knight piece in Twi's belongings (Seen in S 1 E 1 with a brief moment resembling Nightmare Moon when an Hourglass passes in front of it, and again in Secret of My Excess when Spike tries to add it to his hoard.)
