From the looks of things, it's probably because Shout Factory has the DVD distribution rights in America, and they do those themed releases, like the Friendship Express set and the Canterlot Wedding set.

If I had a region free DVD player, I'd have imported the Australian version by now. Oh well, at least I can still watch them all on my PS3.
