I had a thought about pony tribal phenotype expression. What if it works on sort of a ratio system? Imagine a pie chart, whatever slice of the pie is biggest is what tribe you are born as. For an Alicorn to be born they would have exactly equal pie slices, or genetics equaling 33.3% repeating for each tribe. Each pony has a little of each tribe in them, but only one can be expressed. There would be no such thing as 100% earth pony, you might be 95% earth pony, 3% pegasus and 2% unicorn or something.

Probably completely silly but just a thought I had.

Well, if you want to get technical, Twilight's talent is "Magic" and Photo Finish's talent is "ZE MAGICS!", so that could kinda make sense.

I'm guessing that there are similarities, but the C Ms are largely tied to personal interpretation. Two ponies might have the same mark, but it means different things to them.

@Turtle: It's certainly possible, although I'm not sure how that would account for say, the Cakes having non EP children. There'd still have to be some sort of recessive gene in there.

I personally see Fluttershy's more ground-bound inclination to simply be a factor of her personality and preferences rather than some racial influence.

If she was born as Pegasus then no, she could be something like 51% pegasus, 48% earth pony, 1% Unicorn though.

I dunno.. its a theory I need to work out, but it would explain alicorns being born as a perfect balance of all three tribes.

It would also explain why some Ponies tend to be more magical than others of the same tribe.

I personally don't care that much for racial influences affecting personalities and temperaments that much at all, really. It's the exact same logic that lends itself to Always Chaotic Evil, which really bugs me.

I haven't noticed any evidence of this myself. Twilight and Rainbow are both much more capable magically than others of their race, but in both cases it's a result of hard work and dedication, not natural talent. Twilight was studying magic and Rainbow was practicing flying since they were both little fillies.

Off Topic:I just finished the second chapter of my book and both chapters came out to exactly 13 pages. Odd coincidence.

Yes, but that just proves my point. It explains how the same mark canbe interperted in different ways.

The genotype stuff reminds me of my idea for Pony!Bioshock. Ponies can become more unicorn like or pegasi like or earth pony like by injecting different plasmids. And there could be environmental puzzles, like clouds requiring X pegasi plasmids to walk across.

Yeah, I don't think race really affects personality either. Given that among the mane casts, all the racial pairs are huge foils for each other...
