@Perpetual: I'm guessing that it's sort of like dominant/recessive genes; depending on your parents you end up as one of the three types.
@Lurker There's a theory on pony genetics out there that I really like, but I can't seem to find it right now. Basically, ponies have multiple sets of genes determining race, and if they have more A genes than a genes, they're one race, but if they have more a genes, they're another. And one rare combo makes alicorns/winged unicorns.

What do you mean, described as? We only see them briefly in like 2 episodes. We don't really know much about them.
@Sky I'm talking about cross species hybrids here, though. Pony children are exactly one of the three (or four, depending on your fanon) types. You can't go halfsies. Mules, on the other hand, are half donkey, half pony. I was wondering how, if at all, pegasus or unicorn heritage would express itself in a mule.
I still think alicorns come from somewhere else but regular genetics involves hyrbidization.

Oh, that's what you meant. I'm guessing that either you'd get mules of those subtypes, or else the mule genes cancel out wings and horns for some reason.

@ATC Just rewatch MMMMystery on the Friendship Express. Mulia is (of course) a mule. There is also the mule that appears for the sight gag in Applebuck Season and Hurricane Fluttershy.
I still wonder if full blown horses exist in Equestria.
