It's just I always saw magic as being the defining trait of UNICORNS. I always thought the other races were great for reasons completely unrelated to magic (even if it is passive)

Finding out that they can do magic too kinda undermins their Badass Normality

They are not Badass Normal. Not every show need badass normals.

Also that kind of character can be anoying.

They could still be Badass Normal even if they do have passive magic because everypony has passive magic, therefore it's not really a special ability. A pony without it would be considered disabled rather than normal. A pony without any magic is more like a person who doesn't have toes. A pony who's badass without it would be a Handicapped Badass.

Exactly how is AJ inferior?

What IS their passive magic supposed to be anyway?

Ignore me, I've just got a massive AJ bias, and I dislike how she hasn't really gotten that many CMOA's (compared to the rest of the cast)

^^Exactly. If everyone's magic, no one's special for having magic.

Besides, even pegasi have passive magic - the ability to stand on clouds, presumably some flight augmentation, and maybe tactile telekinesis for moving things while flying.

^Earth ponies are supposed to have 'a strong connection with the earth'. People have interpreted that to be everything from a racial green thumb to standing firm.

Regarding AJ, It's just that I dislike her distinct lack of CMOA compared to the rest of the cast

AJ is hardly my favorite character (Twilight is best pony) but I wouldn't mind seeing her get another spotlight episode. Although she's done some pretty impressive stuff. Singlehandedly stopping the stampede at the start of Applebuck Season was pretty awesome.
