The closest thing in any Fic I've seen to transitioning is...uh...Gelding...so not quite the same there.

I have to wonder about the true extent of magic - how much can it really e used to do? How does it affect things? Slipping in to science mode, but are the effects of it observable on more that just the visible level? Like, when Twilight changed a rock into a hat, did it's atoms change, or was it just a rock with a different shape and colour? Basically what I'm wondering is, could a spell change a pony's gender? So far, most of the magic we've seen seems like your basic psychic powers, with a few exceptions.

Well spike had no trouble wearing it.

Spike is also a dragon, and regularly eats gems.

Wearing a rock for a hat might not be too big a problem.

Changing the subject, but Sins of a Solar Empire tells us that there will clearly be ponies in space by way of its "Space Ponies" achievement. This alone is reason enough to prove that we need a manned space program.

You know, I actually put far too much thought into this trans-pony thing last night when I was losing my mind.

I wasn't sure if unicorn magic is actually able to magically change a pony's sex, so I figured if that's not possible a trans pony would need SRS just like a trans human. But then I started thinking about pony surgeons and I came to the conclusion that a pony surgeon would have to be a unicorn so he/she could precisely manipulate the implements using magic. Then I felt like some kind of horrible pony-racist because I was basically saying earth ponies and pegasi could never be surgeons, and concluded that for the purpose of telling a story, it's easier just to have Twilight Sparkle go "poof, you're female!"

This is why I don't post everything that enters my mind.

Given that Twilight completely changes a bunch of people into entirely different things during the Cutie Mark Chronicles episode, I can imagine that a genderswap would actually be fairly easy (if semi permanent).

If she's only able to make it last a few hours, then it would really only be possibly for unicorns of significant magical power.
