The only time I've felt creepier for being an MLP fan was when I saw that Pink Celestia commercial.

I was persuaded to watch this by... IJBM II, IIRC. I've mostly avoided the fanfiction, apart from Cupcakes because I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I don't usually read fanfic.
I was persuaded to watch it partly because of IJBM2, but more because of Anonymous User, who in turn was apparently influenced by massive exposure at Toon Zone.
I haven't really read any MLP fanfiction, aside from skimming Cupcakes. And because I'm a squeamish Nightmare Fetishist, now I love all of the soft-core fan things related to the fic.
I was intrigued when among the various shouts and murmurs I heard about it, that Lauren Faust said that part of the mission of the show was to show that there's all kinds of ways to be a girl. And everything else I read convinced me that this is the kinda thing I woulda loved to pieces as s little kid, and then it was just a matter of finding out when it was on!

Though, admittedly, after reading said fic, my reaction was something like "...Huh. That was odd." and promptly forgot about it for a few months until I decided to look it up on TV Tropes.

I wasn't interested in watching FIM even when it had reached rising meme status.
... Then of all people, my little borhter had discovered it, and urged me to watch a few episodes.
7 or so episodes later, I had a "how long have I've been here?" reaction.
It's alright, and definetly succeeds in being the "show for girls that doesn't make grown ups want to shoot themselves." It's not the overhyped awesomeness it is, but certainly better than expected. And the internet memes surrounding it are amusing.
I think I first found out about it in detail via Know Your Meme, as I recall.

I might read the fic just so I can write my own alternate ending and title it "Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash star in a Nine Inch Nails video." Because that's way cooler than auditioning for a Hitchcock movie. I'd need some pretty serious brain blech afterward though.

The fic is meh. Needs more craziness.

I broke down and watched just to see what the entire frakking internet thought was so avatar-worthy.

I do admit, the show has some pretty adorable moments.
And swings into quite funny bits too.
And I never expected to see slapstick in a girly show.
And yet, it doesn't seem too out of place. Maybe because Pinkie Pie pretty much made it clear with her first appearance that things can and will get pretty random.
