Crystal ponies are fictional creatures that are maintained "alive" if people read about them and their culture, so the mane six are putting up a fair about them, like a renascence fair or... comicon

It's a Brigadoon situation, the Crystal Empire phases out of time for centuries at a time, the only way for it to stay in time permanently is for the ponies of the Crystal Empire to forge a bond with the rest of the ponies of Equestria strong enough to hold them. Cadance is using her magic to fake that bond for now to hold them, but it won't last, the fair is a plan to get Crystal and normal ponies to bond.

Build a fool proof system, and the world will create a better fool. My random thoughts

Man, now I have to have spoilers on, because I want to go into this season unspoiled. In fact, knowing that there are crystal ponies is too much. I'm tempted just to leave, but I can't stay away for nearly a month.

What I find interesting about the Crystal Empire story is that it seems like they're going for a story that might be a good way to introduce children to the study of anthropology and sociology, with the way the Mane Six are singing about discovering and re-introducing the traditions of a lost society. At least it seems that way so far, although the story might end up being about something different and not being about the sociology and cultural traditions of the Crystal Empire.

Also, as much as I want to hear the songs, I listened to Smile Smile Smile when it came out and I had to wait a long time to hear it in show. So no songs either.

@Purple Dalek: Is that "Always study...TO THE EXTREME!" thing a reference to Poochie from The Simpsons? Because that made me think of where he says "Hey kids, always recycle...TO THE EXTREME!!" to the camera before driving off with Itchy and Scratchy's car. (yes, the Poochie episode is pretty much my favorite episode of The Simpsons ever)

I could see Twilight Sparkle doing that, too. She would make sure to put a waterproofing spell on the book first, of course.
