@Gex: Malware? I've been keeping tabs and so far the most prominent ones to me are Flame (patched), the new Mac drivebys (patched), the evil Android changeling malware (Google's working on a fix), and some undead malware that people are too lazy to purge from their rigs until the US government got fed up and decided to cut the DNS to the afflicted machines (Never heard about it until they decided on the DNS purge thingie).

Well, the news is saying something about a massive malware virus that hits today that is estimated to affect several hundred thousand people. It's saying that it's more like an "internet blackout" than a computer-harming virus. My mom's doing a full system scan on the good computer right now, so hopefully we'll be okay.

What's happening is that there are hundreds of thousands of lamer rigs not being updated or patched or cleaned, and they've all caught the same "undead" botnet malware (Undead in this case means that its masters no longer control it and the command servers have been rendered harmless by the security firms). The government seeks to contain this problem by getting them to clean up and get patched OR ELSE they get their DNS disabled forcibly.

Oh that thing. Basically what happened is that the virus redirects your DNS requests (Required to use the internet) to the hacker's servers. When the FBI took them down, they created their own servers that pretend to be the evil servers in order to let victims still use the internet. But now they're taking down their own servers.

Yeah, sorry about the misinformation, I just got the full details on what the virus does and who disconnects you from the internet. My computer appears to be safe, so I'm using it to fetch info for my mom about the malware.
