Good morning, Equestria. I have another new hypothesis.

When she was a little filly (even littler than y'all, CMC), she ran away to Manehattan to find her special talent. At another point in her life, she ran away to Dodge Junction because she couldn't win any prize money at a competition, one that she particularly considers herself to be really frickin' good at.

Could it be that Applejack has a history and/or a tendency to (literally) run away from her problems instead of facing them head-on?

Then again, when she does face her problems, she's pretty stubborn about it (see Applebuck Season), but that's when she believes herself able to overcome it. On her own.

Maybe that's the thing. We already know Applejack has a tendency to try to push through life's struggles single-handedly (read: alone). But when she can't, she runs away with wounded pride and a head full of shame.

(I will admit that I may have a perception filter in effect, in that this is almost exactly like me, if you substitute "running away" with "being a shut-in who only mostly talks to people on the internet".)

@Kyler Considering that that's two instances in her whole life, I wouldn't call that a tendency.

Hence why I called it a hypothesis, and not a theory. We'd need more data to be sure. I didn't say that she had a tendency, I wondered if she might have a tendency. As it is, it's a question, not a statement.

@Kyler Thatch: That seems pretty sensible to me. I wonder if there are any other situations of that sort in the show? I can't remember.

Note that in both of those situations, there wasn't anyone else relying on her; they were personal problems. I think she'd be much more motivated to face her problems if running away meant abandoning others.

[down] Don't apologize, that was brilliant.

I don't get to watch any fireworks because of the blazing heat in my town being too hot for me to go outside. This sucks.

Kyler: I admit that theory does give a interesting contrast to the other characters. Compared to say Rarity, who is enthasised a heavy opposite to AJ and occasionally rather self absorbed and easily distracted, however she seems more self aware of her flaws and actually tries to resolve them head on in most of her episodes.

I think someone pointed this out in their review of Ponyville Confidencial, the Apples are more closely knit than Rarity and Sweetie Belle, but it's because of this that they are so unadjusted to the slightest revelation of betrayal and are left completely aloof, compared to Rarity, where arguing with Sweetie Belle is the norm so deals with it in a much more rashional and sympathising manner.

It's another case of how quirks clash in both an equally positive and negative sense.

Pfft, most of the fireworks outside in my neighborhood suck. Seeing as how we're all packed in tight, it'd be a fire hazard if something huge went off.

Well Applejack is very much in control of her flaws most of the time. She rarely is the one causing the problem from episode to episode.

Do you mean from a store, or are they just handing out free ice cream?

@Ace: That is kind of what I like about the show, rather than showing a character in a constantly positive or constantly negative manner (eg. this guy is always right while this one is always wrong). I tend to hate such ethics in a media, not just because it's one note, but because it neglects character traits that for all intentions aren't always like that and can sometimes lead to broken aesops because of it.

Fi M tends to show how certain character traits can be both pivotal and detrimental (let's face it, in almost any other media, Pinkie would be an immoral idiot that never won an argument against a character like Twilight).

@Bluespade: I dunno, while she has a higher degree of sanity than some of the others, she does still have plenty of flawed moments (usually any episode Rogers writes). Same for Twilight. Probably just as well. If they didn't I'd probably think they were rather dull. I'm not a huge fan of clear cut Straight Men.
