The success of the Final Destination franchise can largely be attributed to its gimmick - you got a slasher film with no slasher villain, per se, so it's crazy freak accidents instead.

Lots of horror films revolve around a gimmick. Obviously, some are better than others.

Now I'm imagining how Chess With Luna would play out.

Luna is a terrible chess player (after all, the game was invented while she was on the moon), but she loves playing so much that she can never turn down the challenge.

Eventually Celestia has to lay down the rule that any given pony can only cheat death through chess once.

The Greek Pantheon are full of arrogant, petty, hedonistic psychopathic manchildren who are all far too immature to handle the immense power they have for anything truly decent. Compared to other pantheons, the Greeks are that dysfunctional family who's problems start bleeding over into the rest of the neighborhood.

@Meta: Well, my personal fanon is that they reincarnate rather than having an afterlife. But for psychopomps I would go with either a scholar/storyteller who writes the last words of their life then close their book once their 'story' is done, before starting the story of their next life, or messenger pigeons from some unseen force that tells them it's time to move on.

Which would make pigeons a symbol of death in pony culture. which is interesting to think about.

Ever read Norse mythology? You get Baldur who dies because he gets too cocky after his mom makes everything in the universe except for one thing promise not to hurt him (yes, this is real, no I did not learn this from Yahtzee) and Loki causing shit to happen due to his bastard children, Freya who goes sleeping around with dwarves because she wants a nice necklace, Loki gradually doing things more and more For the Evulz, and petty feuds with giants.

Norse mythology is a lot of fun. My school library had this great big book of it that I devoured once. Don't remember a lot of it, but it was still cool.

Noooo, the Norse gods pretty much outright murdered a guy cause they didn't want to uphold their end of the bargain.

There was one funny bit when a few giants put them in their place, though.

Also, you forget that Hephaestus and Dionysus, minus a few bouts of inflicted insanity in the latter's case, were generally pretty nice.

Well, that's more Values Dissonance than anything Pannic. I mean, that was pretty much standard for the territory. The Greek Gods were considered psychotic even by the standards of their time.

I was always annoyed by the Final Destination movies.

because they had the potential to ACTUALLY be interesting. Instead they ALWAYS succumb to Downer Endings and it's shown time and again that death is unbeatable. Compelling drama that does not make. Why should I care if there's no chance that any of the heroes will survive?

but then they couldn't cash in on the Saw crowd. How many people you think are just watching to see people die horribly?

Well, they both cater to the gore crowd, though my understanding is that the first film actually wasn't very gory.

I'll never get why horror films are moving towards torture and gore. They aren't scary, they're just unpleasant.

A lot of horror films are pretty crap. Some of the ones that I think are actually good include Psycho and the first two Scream films. Yes, typical, I know.

I always love a good suspense film, though.

@Pannic: Out of curiosity, are there any zombie movies that you like? The good zombie films are what I tend to hold in high regard as some of the horror films that I actually like. Night of the living dead, Dawn of the dead and Day of the dead in particular are films that I enjoyed {It's been ages since I saw Night though}.

Oh, one film that was actually good that had a torture scene in it that I saw recently: Reservoir Dogs. Odd movie. Hard to put my finger on it.

I definatly agree with you that Psycho and the first two Scream films were good horror films. I hate the third Scream film, and I thought the fourth one was kinda meh despite there being a few things I liked in it.

That was a good film too. I need to watch it again sometime.

Problem is that movies like Saw and Hostel and the films that followed don't seem to understand the principle that "Less is More." If they more implied a lot of the brutal violence it would have a lot more emotional impact, as opposed to hitting us with bad special effects that reduce the characters (and we use that term lightly in this case) to pieces of meat. If more films used the Gory Discretion Shot things would be better, or at least less shamelessly sleazy.

You just about summed up my views on most modern horror films. Don't you just miss the days when we could actually care about the main charectors of a horror movie? Seriously, blood and gore alone does not make a movie scary. Unpleasent, perhaps {Not for me usually, I have a high tolerance of fictional blood and gore}, but not scary. You have to have suspence in there too, and that just won't work if I can't give a shit about any of the charectors.-_-

Admittedly even a lot of older horror films fail on the characterization front. I mean, I watched the original Friday the 13th and I wasn't very impressed. All I could think about was how much it cribbed from other, better films.

But yeah, they need to do more for characterization. That's why people liked the first two Scream films. I mean, heck, when Randy died in Scream 2 people were actually sad to see him go.

If Cabin in the Woods ever hits the Netflix instant watch I'll give that a look. Positive ratings on RT. Anyway, I'm gonna get some sleep now.
