With men it goes, from highest to lowest: tenor, baritone, bass.

For example, here's a tenor song in musical theatre (and a Villain Song, for that matter):

"Stars" is a good example of a baritone song. "Ol' Man River" is a bass song.

@Story That has a play as an actual in-universe framing device. This (presumably), would not.

[up][up][up] Although I wouldn't exactly call Gabe a villain. But yeah, kind of sort of a Villain Song.

[up] If I'm not mistaken, it's alto, contralto, and soprano?

Isn't Baritone subdivided into a lot of tones as well? Since it covers a pretty wide range?

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Brave are the only 2 movies I want to see this summer.

For women it goes soprano, mezzo-soprano, and contralto, but legit contraltos are so rare that they're usually just lumped in with mezzo-sopranos. For example, soprano aria:

All the voice types have a lot of divisions. For example, with tenors you have your lyric tenors and your heldentenors and your buffo tenors etc etc. Like, with a soprano, the Queen of the Night isn't the same kind of soprano as, say, the title role in Susannah, though there are skilled singers who can cover multiple types.

Isn't there a regular alto?

Well, -cough-, if you could have a kung fu Jesus fight vampires, why not have Abraham Lincoln hunt vampires? tongue

Do you think that one pony Bon Bon will get her own episode? I'm divided, because the few times she had a speaking role, she acts like the sort of Jerkass you want to punch in the face, but if she had her own episode, it might explain why she is so unsympathetic when she opens her mouth.

[up][up][up]"Alto" is generally only used in choral music, often taken as a shortened version of "contralto."

Why are contraltos so rare?

what's Staccato?

I can't say either sounds appealing, but maybe if enough people recommend them.

Staccato refers to a short method of playing something - basically you see a quarter note with a staccato mark, you play it as an eighth note followed by an eighth rest. That's the rule of thumb/convenient way of thinking about it.

With contraltos it's mainly a matter of A. it's a deep voice, and B. vocal techniques and tastes have changed so that people don't quite sing that way, or people who would be contraltos pretty much train as mezzo-sopranos. I probably couldn't tell the difference.

No, not exclusive to string instruments.

Anyway, now off to choir and three hours of Sviridov.

@Ginger

Basically, staccato is playing a note short.

@Ginger You probably shouldn't ask about more complex musical concepts if they need basic ones you also don't understand to be explained properly. tongue

@Lurker I didn't KNOW that it was a complex term! sad

Todd in the Shadow's called Justin Bieber's voice a Staccato voice. How was I supposed to know any better?
