Prions are even worse than viruses when it comes to getting rid of them. They aren't alive, so you can't kill them. They're one molecule each, so they're too small to easily filter. They're made of pieces of you so anything that affects them will affect you as well. Seriously, they're bad news.

@Sereg: I found out about Prions from some old backissues of Reader's Digest. CJB is a nasty thing and the Mad Pony Disease in Project Horizon is scarier because it definitely follows the pattern of CJB.

Yes, viruses technically don't count as alive either, but they still need living cells to reproduce. Prions just need protien.

The problem with "alive" and "living thing" and "life" is that our definition of them is just so nebulous that it's pretty much "you'll know it when you see it... unless we're talking about viruses".

Viruses are an interesting method of applying genome patches, but I always thought biochemistry hacking by altering chemical state was easier to do. Granted, the genome patching will permanently affect your new cells.

Yeah, Biologists can argue a bit when it comes to the definition of life. Personally, I think that viruses should count, but I understand why they don't.
