The problem with "alive" and "living thing" and "life" is that our definition of them is just so nebulous that it's pretty much "you'll know it when you see it... unless we're talking about viruses".

Viruses are an interesting method of applying genome patches, but I always thought biochemistry hacking by altering chemical state was easier to do. Granted, the genome patching will permanently affect your new cells.
