She was the first one to try and take a bite of the cake. It was through her that they initially established how important it was that no one could even TOUCH the cake and how protective Pinkie was of it

yeah, , but that was something that coulda easily been done by anypony.

So much for remaining mostly unspoiled.

that's what I'm saying, she might as well have not been there at all.
People can complain about her not doing anything, but they don't complain much about say, Pinkie and Fluttershy being in Boast Busters, but not doing anything.
This is far from the first time that members of the mane cast have shown up with the others, but barely done anything. And like Ginger said, she establishes that the cake can't be touched.
yeah, , but that was something that coulda easily been done by anypony.
Except this gives her a role in the episode, making it her appearance not pointless. tongue

Who's Lin? Do you mean Franziska?
No, I mean Lin.*

@Stevebat: That game is surprisingly fun...

It reminds me of Catherine in a weird way.

Lin is cool, but not a show-off. She doesn't brag. She does does awesome. Hence, awesome.

Reminds me of HPMoR!Amelia Bones.

I think people might have missed my edit, so I'll post it again. Hypothesis: Applejack also served as a Red Herring.
Can you tell me who you are? Can you tell me where I am?

Is it that you feel as though the Law of Conservation of Detail was violated by having her present, but not affecting the plot in any way?

yeah, I think that best describes how I feel about it, especially since this series is rather good about conservation of detail, like that phoenix nest in dragon quest.

I saw all of them were on the train, and thought "Finally, all 6 will get to do something together for the first time in a couple of episdoes!" and then AJ didn't get to do anything...felt kinda cheated.

Where does the term Red Herring come from?

Of course, then there was The Pandorica Opens where that sort of posturing ruined everything, or at least, didn't do a damn thing to turn around the situation he was in.

What about Midnight?

@Blissey If it helps any, AJ was kinda overexposed in season one, so she's balanced out over all in season two. Of course, watching the episodes in order makes it hard to really care, especially when you end up going through a character drought like that.

On another note has anyone been to cinema and had people start cheering or reacting loudly? I haven't but I hear stories of it happening all the time and I'm glad I've never encountered it.

I've never had it happen in a real movie theater, but I've defintiely seen it in somewhat more informal showings. I remember when I watched Independence Day, people cheered whenever Will Smith did anything.

really, AJ is one of my favorite of the mane 6. It's just that she hasn't done a damn thing in like 6 episodes outside the opening, and now she finally comes along on the main adventure, and she still doesn't do anything.

such a tease!

@ginger, iirc red herring comes from the usage of red herrings to lead wolves/dogs on the wrong trail. Or to train them. Something like that.

If I understand the current topic correctly, we're talking about the 'layers' of episode morals right?

@Bliss Hey, she alone with Rarity (with her doing all of the hard work) managed to fix a damn dam and patrol the ENTIRE perimeter of the Everfree Forest in It's About Time tongue
