@ginger Maybe some kind of magic nutrition or whatever, but not calories and vitamins type nutrition. Maybe they help him send letters via flame?

I assume that Spike somehow gains nutrition from the gems. Diamonds are carbon, so that's easy to understand. Preumably he can gt some trace elements from some others. I don't know much abou the chemical composition of various gems, but I suppose we could look it up.

Hm. Ponibooru seems to be working slightly more consistently now, but it's still prone to errors and is really slow.

Okay, Spike apparently likes sapphires which are Aluminium Oxide. This suggests that he needs more Aluminium in his diet than he's getting. This is supported by the fact that his favourite is turquoise which also contain aliminium (along with copper, phosphorous, hydrogen and oxygen).
