Is it true that a Unicorn can't really do magic until they earn their mark (seeing as though their magic is tied to it?). Except for really basic spells?

If so, maybe that's why Sweetie dosn't really do magic.

Even Twilight Sparkle struggled to use telekinesis in Cutie Mark Chronicles ON A FREAKING BOOK. So it makes sense that Sweetie Belle is limited with her magic.

[up]Well I wasn't expecting her to do anything amazing with it, just wondering why she hadn't even used it to lift something. Heck, even Snails can cast a light spell. And I assume there was at least a fair bit of time between Twilight's initial attempts at page turning and when she made her attempt to get into the school. Presumably she had a bit of talent by the time she got her cutie mark.

Snails has a cutie mark. It's infinitely easier for a unicorn to use magic when he or she has a cutie mark.

What would the magical ability of some unicorn whose special talent is singing even be like? (Hypothetically speaking.)

[up][up][up] again, they were expecting a filly to do entrance exam level magic without her cutie mark

I wouldn't say it makes it easier so much as let you know what types of spells you should be focusing on

After that consideration I think that excercize was a Secret Test of Character. Considering how few Dragons we see in Canterlot and how even the most powerful unicorn struggled with basic telekinesis I think the egg test was supposed to judge about how a unicorn filly takes not being able to do a certain kind of magic. Considering that magic is limited by one's cutie mark and that the school was about teaching magicians of all types they probably thought it was wise to check how unicorns reacted to magic they can't do.

Hold it, if Cutie marks control the magic you can learn. What about Trixie? She seems to be able to do magic that isn't strictly limited to performing

What if her magic was just "tricks" that made her appear to be more powerful than she actually is? Like a stage magician in real lifr he talent is distracting others while she does simpler abilities to set up her act.

I think Trixie's thing is that her magic is limited to flashy stuff. It extends far enough to allow her to one-up the other ponies, but when it comes to doing anything that isn't a performance, it doesn't really do much. All the stuff she tried on the Ursa Minor could have been the result of typical unicorn telekinesis.

As far as Twilight goes, I get the feeling that she was a late bloomer who had an inordinate amount of trouble using her magic properly before her big moment. We haven't seen enough fillies to know whether or not all unicorns are the same way.

I've been thinking about Earth Pony magic. Word of God says that they have passive magic. What does this mean?

Take AJ for example. Could she grow an apple tree anywhere in the world, in any climate, so long as she puts the time and effort into it because her magic assists her?

Or take a blacksmith Earth Pony. Would their stuff be incrediably tough/well made because their magic enchanted it whilst they were forging it?

How do we know the tornado wasn't caused by precise telekinesis?

wild mass guess The cutie mark crusaders will be responsible (or partially responsible) for Dischord's defeat

A future episode will be about how one of the CMC (Most likely Sweetie Belle) gets her cutie mark and ditches her old friends for Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, but at the end of the episode Sweetie goes back to her old "True" friends.

I always figured that with Twilight there was actually a lot more time between her seeing Celestia raise the sun and her attempt to enter the school than we saw. Her parents thought she could get into the school for gifted unicorns after all, so she had to have gotten better than she was when she was struggling with a page. Her failure to hatch the egg could have just been exam nerves.

That isn't power that's precision. Like a human magician has no real magic but is good with her hands Trixie could have little real magic but is good at telekinesis.
