Time to play First Episode Recommendations again. Someone I know is a bit condescending towards the show, but she's finally agreed to try watching an episode. So what do you think? I know Dragonshy is the most commonly recommended first episode, but I'm a bit tempted to suggest the Royal Wedding. It does have action and an awesome song, but I'm worried she might get bored with all the stuff at the beginning.

@ginger: Ah, sorry I don't read many fanfics.

I wonder how a Brainwashed and Crazy story would work out (we got a taste of it in the Season 2 opener but in a skewed sense).

@storyeller: Perhaps one of the stories that doesn't have too saccharine a atmosphere (it's one of the show's charms admitedly but I can see how that can put people off). Some episodes like Lesson Zero have an amusing deconstruction of the usual childlike structure of similar shows so might make for an amusing taster to a more cynical viewer.

@Yeller: I wouldn't go with the Wedding; if she's condescending already, then '888FF' will end her willing suspension of dis8elief right then and there.

Also, in tangentially pony related news, I saw someone riding a horse by the grocery store this evening. In the middle of a giant city, with no visible explanation.

I'd like to see a subverted Brainwashed and Crazy plot where everyone instantly KNOWS that their friend has been brainwashed [lol]

@Red Curious, is it just typing Bs as 8s that the troll you're channeling does, or do they do more?

CEQ is pretty awesome. the corruption thing

The Big Bad makes clones of the Mane 6 then uses dark magic to invert there personalities, and hence there elements. AJ's clone is a tricky, devious, shapeshifter, Pinkie's feeds off inflicting fear, etc...

@ginger: I had a funny idea about the mane cast basing themselves so much on morals and friendship that when they are turned evil they become completely incompetent. Say a villain brainwashes them all to it's minions and they proceed to completely tear their plan apart due to lacking the common sense gained from their usual scruples (Twilight 'corrects' all the schemes and lengthens everything with her overintricacy, AJ and RD becoming warring Co Dragons, Fluttershy is a Dirty Coward, Rarity is too busy preening herself and Pinkie is...well Pinkie...but evil), leading them to be changed back in exasperation. Given the disaster that they were in Elements of Harmony it would make sense.

[up]Lesson Zero has a supposedly cute little pony go insane trying to figure out the Aesop of the episode. It's a brilliant parody of moralistic cutesy shows for the Tastes Like Diabetes loathing viewer.

@crow: She also 8folds punctuation marks sometimes (usually exclamation points), sometimes letters when she's reaaaaaaaally excited, types 8s for the sound 'ate', and uses emoticons like ::::).

I'm trying to show some restraint. XD

@Story: Dragonshy is usually a pretty safe bet, although depending on the person there might be better episodes. Lesson Zero is a fun episode, but it's not as indicative of what the show is actually like. And it works better when you're already familiar with the characters. Twilight's breakdown isn't as hilarious if you don't know how rational she normally is. I'm tempted to recommend A Bird in the Hoof, but that's not enough of an ensemble episode.

Also, I see someone has been reading Homestuck...

heh reminds me of the Beast Wars episode where Rhinox gets infectd with an "evil virus" optimus learns about this, and just leans back and chills telling all the maximals to relax and not do anything. Que Rhinox single handidly kicking all the predacons butts as he backstabs his way to the top.

Glad you like the idea, Ace.

For some reason I think the ponies' personalities would work in a villainous edge, Hearths Warming Eve and Lesson Zero gave a little sample of this.

Come to think of it, when is Dastardly Whiplash Spike coming back?

I do want to see a pony judge as an antagonist though

Well I had an idea for a fangame like that, but it's been languishing in the brainstorming phase for months.
