Well, it's a special ability, so I beleive it targests resistance. If sucessful, the Incarnate is temporarily replaced by the target unit, except completely under your control.

What I mean is, in-universe, why do both the ghost and it's target die when you use Possess

The Incarnate doesn't die, it's still inside the possed unit. Once the possed unit dies, the incarnate reappears.

On Possess: flavour-wise the Ghost forcibly takes control of the hostile and drags them away from the fight.
