I don't know. The emphasis has always been that it was only Celestia and Luna who stood up to Discord (they don't seems the types to hog all the credit, they'd mention if there were other element wielders).

That, and every time we've seen the elements there's been 6 of them.

Celestia and Luna traveled through time and got 3 copies of each to help. That would also explain why Luna's currently missing. She's helping to defeat the original Discord.

Really. There's no indication that Celestia and Luna had any mortal helpers, and to be honest, having the Princesses of the Sun and Moon defeating the embodiment of disharmony with the Elements of Harmony makes a better story than having the Princesses of the Sun and Moon and Four Ponies From Old Canterlot do it.

Unless something happened to those four ponies that turned them into those four stars that helped Nightmare Moon escape. Maybe they were also corrupted, or maybe they just wanted to help Luna.

I do like how it's implied that only the mane cast are capable of purifying enemies using the elements. They were the first to use the elements to their fullest potential after all., Before them, it seems that all Luna and Celestia could do was seal the problem away and then hope for the best. Very inefficient

Yeah, I think that's the main reason that Celestia didn't free herself or try to deal with the problem herself when Nightmare Moon came a'knocking. She sincerely wanted to be able to bring Luna back, and couldn't bring herself to seal her away again. She hoped that Twilight could surpass her use of the Elements, and bring Luna back.

Maybe that was a side effect of not having six ponies to wield all of them?

I wonder what effect they'll have on Discord? Nightmare Moon actually had something to purify, but Discord has always been a jerk.

it's pretty obvious that Discord is a Complete Monster.

does things that are horrible by the story's standards? check

must be played seriously? he's hammy but not to the point where you can't take him seriously.

no good justification? he doesn't have one at all.

doesn't regret his actions? he does it For the Evulz so yes.

can't be redeemed? we don't know yet but at this point, it would be an Ass Pull if he is redeemed.

Overused term Overused term, overused term, overused TERM!!!

Brony, I've had this discussion with you on other threads. 90% of cartoon villains are Complete Monsters if you go by that kind of criteria. They just aren't played seriously enough to qualify. What's the point in identifying him as a CM anyway?
