So, Pony Fantasy 6. I've haven't left Narshe yet and wow... this game. Moogles are Scootaloos, Applebloom is Locke, and items have been changed. I'm just glad my brother can spot the details of this game.

And long doesn't equal good, either. Sometimes being economical is better in storytelling. Sometimes less is more.

Applebloom as locke just comes off as wrong to me.

@Steve: Who would be better to fill the role of thief -loses lung- I mean treasure hunter?

The part with the school could have been shortened I think. I don't think the story is too long, but there are definitely places it could be made shorter without losing much.

@Pannic: The general feel I get isn't that the events of the chapter are stressed or unnecessary, just that it may or may not have been better to split it up. As for length in general, my approach has always been "it should be as long as it needs to be". Include everything necessary, but don't pad it either.

Also, the first Ultros fight in PF 6 is hilarious, especially with Luna as Sabin.

@Steve: Yeah, it's weird, but it's also kind of hilarious to see AB actually being sort of competent.

I don't think we're saying that it's bad, as we haven't actually read it to see how well-written or made that chapter is. It's just that if there are clear spots where you can stop, it seems like a better idea to split the chapter into separate chapters or even subchapters or something. It seems really odd to have one chapter be that much longer than the others, even if it's an important one.

When I first heard of Pony Fantasy 6, I just assumed it would be a sprite swap and not much else, but it sounds like the creator went all out changing things. FF 6 is one of my favorite games, so I guess I'm definitely going to have to play this.

@ pannic, true, but the exact opposite is ALSO true, sometimes there is just so much story that needs telling, you can't do it briefly without gutting it, long as the story done'st FEEL long and feel like it's lagging or been padded then no reason to hate it JUST becuase of it's length. no one is saying it's great BECUASE of it's length, it's length is just a result of how much story there is that needed telling.

If a story is long becuase of padding, or overly excessive Purple Prose, or a ton of stuff that doens't have any real impact on the overal sotry, yeah the author needs to leanr to shorten things up and be concise.

FO:E Is not like that, it is that long becuase that is how much story relted stuff is needed (ok tehre are FEW things that could be padding, but even those add SOMETHING to the overll story and the really "could be easily cut" segments are few and fairly short themselves) If anything it actaully starts feeling kinda rushed near the end becuase there was clearly room for more there.

yeh pretty mucht he only COMPLETELY unnecessary part that really could be just deleted from the story without effecting ANYTHING is the audio tapes about Daimond Tiara.

The technical aspects are all the same and the story is basically the same thing. The dialogue, some character sprites, and some items names are modified.

I'm not talking so much about filler as chopping the story into manageable chunks rather than suddenly having the chapters double in length.

Well one issue is that the memory orbs that Pip discovers at the end are played throughout the chapter in a bit of anachronic order. So if it were split into multiple chapters, it would be a lot more confusing.

yeah, that chapter pretty much NEEDED to be that long just becuase how it was written and it really works like that. If this was a book, could have been spilt easier, but as someone said, it's a fic "published" one chapter at at time, and she wanted to give everyone the entire story there at once.

long chapter, yes, easily split if needed, ok yeah, plenty f point you can easily take a break, yup, really really well written and just feeling right as a single chapter, oh buck yes.

I just notice it's a thing that seems to happen quite a lot, and I'd like it if shorter stories got the attention they deserved rather than just the long ongoing epics that keep people's attention because it's an ongoing story. More often... shorter story gets posted. Gets attention, then it's forgotten. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just how it looks a lot.

Unless it's fucking My Little Dashie.

Well the majority of the stories I read are the shorter ones, but the longer ones just have that much more time to get stuck in your head. And an ongoing story invites ongoing discussion more than a story that is a one shot.
