Ash didnt have the badges necessary to control Charizard and Charizard knew it? Thats going by game lore though... you could only control pokemon over a certain level by having beaten certain gyms.

He was still a Jerk after he got the right badge though... I think...? I stopped watching the cartoons after a while... it just got too silly.

Evolution. Apparently it changes a pokemon's personality a bit. but really it was becuase Charizard was epically popular so they wanted Ash to have him, but also epically powerful, so to keep Ash from just bringing out Charizard and curb-stomping is opponent they had Char act like a douche and not fight unless he felt like it.

even then doesn't work, that "need badges ot control" thing only applied to traded pokemon, to keep someone from just trading a level 100 team to a fresh run and steamrolling everything.

@ Ginger: Because Ash didn't prove himself to be a worthy trainer.

Which doesn't really make any sense because the thing that convinces Charizard is Ash spending days chipping him out of ice showing his compassion which he already showed when he first got Charmander.

@ Purple: The one time he did that before Charizard started listening to him was the time everyone's memory was erased.

But Charmander was an outsider Pokemon... he used to belong to someone else but ended up with Ash because he was kind to him. He wasnt technically traded but he was still not originally owned by Ash.
