@crow If you're born out of wedlock in ASOIAF you don't inherit your parent's last name. You get a generic last name fitting the area you're in

e.g. Every bastard in the north has the surname "Snow"

It goes by realm. There are 7 realms (8 including Dorne, I think) in the country of Westeros in ASOIAF. Each has a unique Bastard name
