There's a plenty of classics. I personally love The Warriors as one of the greatest films. But films don't really form fandoms. The fandoms are mostly for the directors. Unless it's Star Wars since then they love the films and extended universe but have mixed feelings on the director..
Of course TV Series To Movie films do have fandoms.
What's the worst that could happen anyways?

Yes but that's again a well known series turned into a movie. Everyone knew Batman even if they had never seen any of the comics or the series prior to the movies.
