Was it specifically horses she was changing them into? Did she say it in dialogue?

^I mean, they have to exist. Twilight knows what horses are and that they're supposed to pull carriages, so... who knows?

'regular' horses are extinct as a naturally-occuring species in Equestria.

Maybe ponies evolved from horses or something. The increased intelligence and magic/flight capabilities of the ponies were better than the large size of the horse.

I still want to know what Equestria was like before Night and Day was invented. Was it permanently dark? Was it permanently light? How did ponies live? Who was in charge?

^Someone mentioned this (it might have been JTeeth) as one of his pet peeves - well, not this specifically, but on a related note. Celestia and Luna are more than a thousand years old and they were ruling for quite some time before the incident with Nightmare Moon. I'm also not sure that they created day and night - legends can be wrong, All Legends Are True aside, and given that Luna looks younger than Celestia, it implies that alicorns age over time - and if they age, what's to say that Celestia and Luna didn't have parents?

...My point, in that rather twisty bit of logic, is that Celestia and Luna might not have created night and day per se.

You're proposing that they inherited them rather?

That would be me. I had the pet peeve regarding the age of Celestia and Luna.

^^Yeah, basically. We'll probably never learn anything about how alicorns work (whether they're a separate species, whether alicorn is a function of godlike power or vice versa, et cetera), but that's the feeling I get - if only because of Egophiliac's heartwarming comics about the princesses as fillies.

Do the ponies know how old the princess' are? As in do they know that they're rulers are basically gods?

^I'm sure they do know how powerful their princesses are, but remember, to them nature is something ponies do, not stuff that actually happens. To them, having their princesses raise the sun and the moon every day and night is impressive, but not world-shaking, because it's only natural that someone has to do it.

Anyway, who's to say they're only a thousand years old? For all we know, they could be millions.

My headcanon says that their parents used to do it but passed the duty onto them.

My personal fanon is that the sun and moon move on their own, but they aren't as consistent or reliable when it works that way. Sort of like how in Equestria nature kinda goes on it's own, but the ponies have to work to keep it consistent.

Someone should check when the word "horse" was actually spoken in the show. I remember there was the Headless Horse from Twilight's ghost story, and there were horse-drawn carriages...

Ooh, that's a good theory, JTeeth. Nature does work on its own even in pony-controlled areas; I mean, obviously animals still hunt and mate, plants still grow, and such. The ponies just keep it scheduled. That works on several levels for Celestia and Luna; they don't have to work on keeping their respective charges up, just keeping them on time.

Yet the carriages were clearly being pulled by ponies (drawn by ponies too)

The everfree forest is a prime example of that. It seems to exist fine by itself, but it's definitely more chaotic than the rest of equestria.

Yeah, my personal theory is (and I might have written a fic about this if I had the time) that if the ponies don't constantly monitor the weather, it changes at random. As in you might have like a 100 degree day, followed by a blizzard, followed by a week of fog, followed by whatever. For whatever reason, the ponies clump the different kinds of weather, like putting most of the cold weather at the same time, so that they can deal with it more easily. It would also allow them to avoid droughts and floods by scheduling regular rains rather than having it just happen whenever.

By extension, Celestia and Luna have the most important jobs, because without them you might have like a 72 hour day followed by an 8 hour night or something.
