I agree with Mio on the marketing thing.

But I'm thinking that alicorns are simply "born" from normal mammalian sex. It's possible that Luna and Celestia are simply stronger for whatever reason (why in the hell are they immortal/long-lived?!) but otherwise just normal ponies that can fly, do magic, and have a connection with the earth.

And either Cadence is mortal or will live many years beyond Shining Armor- she seems to grow up from Twilight's Imagine Spot to the current situation, so she is basically just a normal mortal pony with wings.
