I have a question to all the writers and whatever here. How do you handle foreign/historicl cultures? What do you name your languages? I just don't see how to handle it, since it's never come up in the show (apart from AJ's Fancy thing).

I get bored easily.... ><

@ Storyyeller: I'm going to take the Fallout Equestria route and have zebras come from a psudo-africa-like-country. I'm also using the mega-herd phenomenon you see in real Africa to try and derive their culture.

@Story: Well, I had to develop a completely unique culture for Aloa when I wrote TCYB. The thing is, I never developed the full culture. Sure, I've got the basics of it down - they're neighborly, proud, value community etc., as well as some minor details like condoning slavery and the use of medallions as identification and the wrappings as a sign of status(It was never outright stated, but generally the more heavily a pony wraps themselves is a sign of how much money they have), but I never went into depth about all the minutia. And I think that's the trick.

Basically, give your readers just a little snippet of culture here and there, and it'll feel foreign enough for them to settle. Of course, that's assuming you have to invent a culture like I did...

@Story: For pony fanfic? It hasn't come up yet. For original fiction....it's much more complicated. I get advice from world and language building sites. I want my languages to be actual languages rather than ciphers.

@JT: But then you can't design fun stuff like saying that Gnomish doesn't use nouns and verbs, replacing them with more adverbs and adjectives. Though, I'm not bothering much with creating Truespeech so much as reffering to how utterly ridiculusly compkicated it's grammar is (I'm trying to figure out exactly how complicated I can make the grammar so that I can describe it as such. IIRC, my latest draft had 5 degrees of personage for example).
