I think honesty is the best policy. You should ask him if he wants to talk about it and tell him that you're not sure how to react to this but that you're always there if he needs any help... That's the only possible advice I can give...

Ouch. That sucks. First of all. Bring food. A lot of people will, but it helps. Then, just spend time with them if that's what they want. If they need company, just being there is enough.

Doesn't that just mean The Nightmare Night? I've heard that most of the German titles are literal descriptions.
