@Death IIRC, the alicorn is technically the name for a unicorn's horn.

Yeah, hopefully "A Canterlot Wedding" will give us a more accurate term...though if this article

by someone who's seen the episodes is any indication, it might just be "winged unicorn" (which would be even less indicative of a mix of all three kinds).

And like they said, "alicorn" is the material a unicorn's horn is made of. While it may not entirely mean that anymore, it implies to me that they're primarily unicorns. There's just no easy way to get "earth pony" into the name.
