@Stevebat: That pretty much sums my thoughts on it. I'd be fine if they wanted to say, develop Cheerilee/Big Mac or something, but I can't imagine them making a recurring romantic element within the main cast without really screwing up the cast dynamics. Either it would have to be within the mane cast, which basically unbalances their relationships as a whole, or it would have to be with an outside pony, and that would mean either inserting the the newcomer into the group or isolating the mane pony with the outside, both of which would mess up the group.

My problem with romantic plots is that it often overlaps any meaningful interaction the two characters have with anyone but themselves. In order to enthasise they are 'soulmates' they spend most of the time interacting solely with each other and foiling the other almost individually, making their chemistry with others redundant. This is especially detrimental if one or both are main characters.

It would maybe be annoying if not for the Cutie Marks gaining diabetes from it.

That too. They tend to be very bland and almost as sappy as Big Mac and Cherilee here.

Most good romantic relationships are subtle ones which actually focus as much on platonic elements than the lovey dovey ones.

Well I say to watch the first season for terms of plot. Understandably, it is the weakest season. The show really picks up in the second season. Trust me.

Yeah, that's what I liked about how suddenly and bold-facedly the creators made it clear that this cartoon was not going to beat around the bush with how horrible war can be.
