@L Mage: Again, when I say "realistic" I'm talking about works that don't have any fantastic elements. I'm not talking about works that include realistic or mundane elements alongside fantastic ones. We have a trope for that. Or this.

@Apple: Goodnight.

How about works that play fantasy realistically?

That's cool with me. I love stuff like that. Magic Realism is awesome.

@JT

Ah, thanks for the clarification.

Speaking for myself the best works are ones that rely on well developed well rounded characters still faced with realistic human conflicts in a fantastic or mystical setting. Like this show.

@Apple

Night!

I want realistic characters. The plot can be whatever the hell it wants to be. Which is why books like Twilight annoy me so much. There's a chance for a good plot there, but the characters are so awful that the story is ruined.

Goodbye for now crowlover and J Teeth ^^

@L Mage: Yeah, that's part of the reason I love the show as well; it incorporates magic and fantasy into the setting without making it the focus. It's cool to see otherwise mundane plots play out in a fantastic setting.

And I must go, briefly. I'll be back later.

Magical realism is awesome I wrote a poem for class which involved finding a piece of glass on the beach and how it got there. It involved sirens, dancing crabs, and a sunken treasure.

Goodnight Apple.

@Mage because one of my favourite tropes is Hard Work Does Work. (or whatever it's real name is)

10 mooks don't deserve to beat a swordsman who's fought his entire life. In ASOIAF. One man surrounded by 20 soldiers equals death for him. I've never liked Numbers besting skill.

Also, I can't stand Combat Pragmatism. It strikes me as highly unsatisfying

And, re: Singing And Dancing, Glee addresses that, no one actually bursts out into full on sing and dance ever without rehearsal, when theirs a spontaneous musical number it's clearly taking place inside a character's head. javascript:Ad Clicked(clickLineVarName1231114745); [up]

Spoken like a true anime veteran XD (That is not meant to be offensive at all, I myself love anime)

Rainbow: But Tyrantlestia and Scootabuse aren't really believable memes. They're more or less asspulls based on WMGs.

I remember you being okay with Combat Pragmatism if it is between people of equal skill.

@Mage but I dislike shonen too, two of my most hated tropes are Couldnt Catch Up and The Gift

@Bad even then, I'd rather Heroic Resolve be the determining factor

That's one of the biggest things that annoyed me about it to. I read it for the plot ... and then there wasn't one.

I think the problem is largely that many authors treat skill as a quantifiable aspect, and Martin....doesn't.

Anyway, that's why Luminosity was great. It takes the same setting as Twilight, but it actually tells an interesting story.
