I felt like none of the characters in Death Note were really very intelligent, because all of their plans were extremely over-complicated and would have failed utterly if things didn't happen to go perfectly as they'd planned

The bit where L tracks Light down to Japan using the TV Broadcast was pretty clever. And while some of his other deductions could have been wrong, he was going by the most probable explanation.

Yep, and this is a very good example. Characters like those I sort of wish they would just shut their mouths and stay out of the plot entirely, because they break my immersion in the story by being so ridiculous.

And I'm not talking about background ponies or anything like that, I don't expect them to give them distinct personalities. I mean characters who get involved heavily in the plot of a single episode, like that cherry grower AJ worked for, Fancy Pants, Photo Finish, ponies like that.

That was, but after that it went downhill.

In all honesty, I thought the bakers were characterized really well for the amount of screentime they got. I mean, yeah, they weren't exactly rounded, but I thought that they had enough motive and differentiation that they felt like more than just filler characters.
