They probably have a militia of some sort. They aren't regularly on active duty, but they're on call in case something comes up. Other than that there are the royal guards.
I've heard of purple prose.
Twilight mentioned pony wars...

"Contests fought between two masters are decided instantly. An invisible battle is now raging between the two of them." Lulu vs Schneizel
Equestria doesn't seem to need much of a standing army though.
@ Sky: Hm. I don;t know, I guess you could argue that the ar, y might handle the monsters of the everfree though I could also see whatever passes for the Department of Interior handling that sort of thing as well.

Hello there Tealove, how do you do this evening?

@Drenius The problem with discussing armies is that it relies entirely on fanon. Some people see the griffons as a communist Russia-like society, so it would make sense to go to war with them. However, I've also seen them portrayed as a nation of surfers and skaters, who would be no threat. It all depends on your headcanon.

Fabulosity can be such a bore.
I really really hope that the CMC make up some ridiculous story about Celestia. There's so much potential for hilarity.

Inspired by the video above, how about they claim that Twilight Sparkle was given a Geass by Princess Celestia?
@ Sky: Oh, I know a standing army would probably be irrelevant to Equestria since it is a sugar bowl, but this is strictly hypothetical. Also, I find it an interesting idea that they might possibly have one.

@Drenius Would you say the Wonderbolts form some part of their air defense? They did try to take down Huge!Spike after all.

Hm.. I don't know if the Wonderbolts would be part of the Air Force. I mean their trained as stunt fliers, but they unabashedly leapt to the occasion when Spike went on his rampage, which seems to suggest they might have some sort of training with that sort of situation. I'd argue if they weren't part of the air force, they were at least trained as part of the ponyville militia.

Maybe they're a propaganda group. They encourage pegasi to join the defense force using sweet moves.

So they basically serves as military recruiters? That seems most likely, Sky.
