How does a tiara represent being good at business?
I'll do a thing. I don't know. It's a thing in progress. Respect the thing.
How does smiling flowers represent teaching? How does a cluster of stars represent magic research?

How else are you going to represent a concept like magic?
Maybe Cheerilee's talent is gardening. She just enjoys teaching too.

It represents whatever she wants it to.

Maybe her talent is making fancy headgear like crowns and hats?

By the look of things she's not a very good newspaper editor so it won't be a problem that it doesn't fit her cutie mark.
I'm back, any update on the Applelight situation?

I'm trying to make a point. Rarity's cutie mark is gems, but she's not a jeweler. (Her gems are
maybe used as accessories on a dress, if at all.) Flim and Flam have apples, but they're more known for their
machine.
Point is, cutie marks are often symbolic, and there's plenty of room for interpretation.

Were you not paying attention to Cheerilee's lecture during
Call of the Cutie? I will see you in detention, young man.

No fair, Miss! Silver Spoon was distracting me!
Derpy's cutie mark is weird too. What do bubbles have to do with mail delivery?

Well, I always took Rarity's special talent not to be clothing per se, but bringing out the inner beauty in things/ponies. She just prefers to do it with clothes and gems

Mail delivery isn't even canon. And for all we know, it's not her special talent even if it is her day job.

We saw her delivering stuff in Feeling Pinkie Keen.

@ Latenight, exactly, they are an image of what a pony is thinking/feeling when they finally realize just who they are.

@ Purple: Looked more like helping somebody move to me.
Tealove is best pony.

Actually, yeah, I like the idea that Rarity's talent is bringing out beauty and the say she does it is through clothing. The saying "a diamond in the rough" fits her philosophy too.
