The episode summary lied to me. I came in expecting the tornado/hurricane to be highly involved and there was very little of it at all. Disappointing.

But I just ADORED how everypony, not just Rainbow Dash congratulated Fluttershy not because she was the fastest (that would go to Rainbow), but because she was the one who made the biggest difference and overcame her fears.

Thinking about it more, removing the record from the equation was the absolute right move in terms of writing. The moral of 'every bit counts' only works if they have to struggle to meet the basic goal. Keeping the record would have undercut the moral because they wouldn't really have needed Fluttershy at the end.
I actually thought the record would be important, but I'm glad it wasn't.
