The show basically treats magic as a secondary set of physical laws. Magic doesn't follow the laws of physics, but it follows a set of laws that can presumably be studied and quantified in a scientific manner. Although we really haven't seen it in enough detail to tell if they have units for measuring magic energy or something.

No it doesn't. New diseases are discovered all the time, and just because we don't yet understand how they work does not mean they operate outside of the laws of science.

For those magical plants you could devise a study ... get some test subjects and see if they get the same symptoms from them each time.

Im assuming heart's desire would have variable results but Poison joke would have relatively the same affect each time.

@Emi: I personally despise the idea that Pinkie Sense and teleportation are somehow earth pony powers when no other earth pony in history (or, to be honest, no other pony at all) has exhibited those powers. The Royal Canterlot Voice, on the other hand, is an earth pony power; the Princesses can both use it, and so can Pinkie.

We dont exactly know that though do we? History has likely been recorded by Unicorn scholars, from what we know of History the Unicorn tribe was snooty... and would likely have looked down upon any possible manifestations of magic in Earth ponies as either a fluke or below their notice.

Twilight may be the first true scholar to travel outside of Canterlot and mingle with the "commonfolk" for all we know
