Just had some fridge brilliance about that horse-drawn train. If you think about, polluting the enviroment doesn't exactly help those trying to keep it under control. so my guess is that the engine part is some kind of giant magic rune that allows the ponys to produce enough horsepower (ha-ha) to pull a entire gosh-darned train. The steam thing is just aesthetics, just nothing more than a illusion to keep up the atomsphere.

Answer? One of Pinkie Pie's ancestors did it. Her investors weren't happy with it, but when her next design involved pumping gerbils up with sugar, they decided it would be best to stick with the first one.

I just like how Lauren Faust and her team couldn't decide on whether or not to use the steam engine. Faust thought it was "too human" but her crew really wanted it. So...they made the locomotive horse-drawn. I wonder if there's also a few horse drawn horse-drawn locomotives.

Twilight seems pissed at Cartoon Network.

I remember now that they also used a spotlight in their act.

Also, magic is limited to unicorns, and I think Mr. Breezy was an earth pony.

Actually, something that Ori mentioned gives me a thought: Technology probably varies a lot from place to place. Ponyville probably has some kind of electricity because it is, or at least was, a very earth pony-centric community. Earth Ponies have been shown to have some degree of technological prowess (or at least, Pinkie's shown that they're capable of it)and they don't have magic to assist them in every day tasks. A place like cloudsdale is even more likely to have electricity because they're capable of producing it for themselves easily, so it's just convenient, though likely not electric lighting. A unicorn heavy place like Canterlot seems to be, on the other hand, would likely have very little electricity, because the existence of the university nearby would mean there's a lot of Unicorns with enough skills to keep things running.

Well, I'm off to marathon-watch every episode so far. I could conceivably come out the other end of this a prepubescent girl, but I'm willing to take the risk. I'll just leave these here.

On the subject of whether the others were friends before meeting Twilight, here's how I see it:

I can see Rainbow Dash and Applejack being Vitriolic Best Buds, as they have a lot in common and just have a dynamic when they interact, and with the fact Applejack knew about Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom when she did it the first time. I don't really see either of them as having been friends with Rarity or Pinkie Pie, as RD/AJ are basically polar opposites to Rarity and Pinkie Pie is just such a handful.

Fluttershy obviously would have trouble making friends, and I doubt whether she even knew Rarity all that well before as, if they were friends, it would seem strange for Rarity to be so surprised that Fluttershy had such knowledge of sewing in "Suited for Success". She may have known Rainbow Dash on some level, but I doubt they were friends at all; if anything, Rainbow Dash seems to rather dislike Fluttershy.

If we take Pinkie Pie on her word, than she may indeed know every pony in Ponyville. Knowing her, just meeting someone and throwing them a super-special-awesome party is enough to make them her friend. I can't really see her really sitting down and getting to know anypony though.

Assuming I'm in Twilight's position after having heard all the reasons but before being pestered, I'd probably give them to Applejack and Rainbow Dash. Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie's reasons were more hedonistic, and Rarity's seemed implausible.

Dang, I so want to create a trope called "Pinkie Pie Throws A Party" but I don't know what it would be about. >:/

I am actually of the opinion that the original second ticket was for Spike.

I agree, but I didn't consider Spike as an option since he initially displayed distaste in the prospect of going.
