I really don't see any reason to assume Pinkie is lying. A) She's not the type, B) we've seen straight hair connected to her being depressed in other situations, C) why would she lie about something like that to a group of schoolchildren, and D) why is she the one who gets called out on possibly lying when the other girls' stories are all nearly as coincidentally fortunate?
Also, how would she possibly have known about the Rainboom?

I think the base of the story is true (she really did grow up on a rock farm and got her CM when she threw her first party), but Pinkie being Pinkie, I can see her fudging the details to make the story more interesting. Like painting her pre-party life as more boring than it actually was.
