I really don't see how their friendliness with each other can really be considered subtext, anyway. Some of it shows and they relate to each other better, but again, still friendship stuff. It's really just the nature of a BFF type of relationship. Sure, it CAN go in the direction of actual romantic shipping from there, but if a fic is going to do that, I expect it to work for my suspension of disbelief by doing the logical thing and showing how that gap gets bridged.

True, true. Anyways I'm not a shipper myself, I can accept any pairing as long as (1) it's cute, and (2) it makes at least some kind of consistent sense.

Yep, consistency in portrayl is important too. Also Dusky is still cute :3

Yeah I'm not a shipper at all but neither do I mind if others do it. I was just wondering where the "gender doesn't mean as much in Equestria" opinion comes from. It's really common and I really don't know why.

Dusky has a nice design. I wonder why there's never been a black pony in the show?

You are far from the first to comment on the chatroom like nature of the thread recently. And obviously not the last either.

Presumably dark colored ponies don't contrast well. I guess the closest we've come is Luna, and that was during a dark episode set at night anyway.

@Bluespade: I chalk it up to people realising how much the gender ratio in Equestria seems to favor mares, at least in Ponyville (and at least for Season One). Also, they take it as a Sugar Bowl less likely to be intolerant about such matters. Anyways I figured we needed to Les Yay page to stop some of the Edit Warring over at the Radar page, and it does help quite a bit, so I'm cool.

He was Meh about it.

He didn't like it, per se, but he didn't hate it.

I've heard him attribute that to him expecting to despise it, going in. Sort of a reverse Hype Backlash, if you will.

So, I was watching "Becoming Popular", and I was reminded of something.

That airship that Rarity christened? Probably going to be dismantled and rebuilt, because the bottle not breaking during the christening is considered horribly bad luck.

Also you reminded me of that old Disney Short where they used too much force on the bottle, and the ship slowly unraveled from the damage resulting from that.

As far as the gender not meaning anything, aside from the reasons already given, it could also just be a convenient excuse to do said same gender shipping (even though I don't think there really doesn't need to be an excuse, just a well written relationship).

On a side note, aren't same gender shippings really common in any show with a skewed gender ratio and not just FiM?
