The scene was ambiguous enough for it to go either way.

Besides we always make the assumptions that our heroes are naturally good hearted and will usually do the right thing. Not a safe thing to assume.

I dunno... I felt bad for Spike. Rarity surely knows about the crush as evidenced later in the episode. She used that crush to get the gem from him. You know the mind is going No no, but the body is saying yes yes! Bad Rarity!
