Mm, I've never taken a look at gimp, but does it have a pen tool? That's probably your best bet for inking - assuming that's what you're going for. It's a bitch to do the whole thing, but it comes off looking really nice, and close to the show.
In similar, and really only tangentially related news, I'm Totally making a game about unicorns for one of my classes this quarter. Also narwhals and rhinoceroses, but you know - unicorns! I even doodled a mage unicorn in class today. I'm thinking of giving him a beard...has there been a pony with a beard in the show?

You know something? I'm starting to find this fandom's obsession with incidental ponies comical, because this is a show meant to push toys of the main characters.
Maybe this is brought on by thoughts of some fan making figures of Derpy and the like for Hasbro to sell

^While I'm sure figures of Derpy would fly straight off the shelves, I kind of hope it stays a background thing. If I had to guess why the background ponies have become so popular, I'd say it's because (ironically, since they're all generated with a script of some sort, aren't they?) there's an unusual level of Cast of Snowflakes at work in this show - especially since a lot of the characters make more than one appearance, and people get used to seeing them and speculating about who they are.

Ryuk would obviously have an apple - or maybe a scythe. Light's would either be the Note itself or a gold sparkly design (for his God Of The New World schtick). L's would be his fancy L.

You know something? I'm starting to find this fandom's obsession with incidental ponies comical, because this is a show meant to push toys of the main characters.
What I wonder is why they don't use more of the official toys as the basis for incidental characters. Is it just that most of the toy line wasn't finished before most of the show was planned? If so, we may have an idea of what the extended cast will look like for season 2...

Nah, I'm pretty sure their attributes are all chosen manually; otherwise the ponies wouldn't have to be cloned so often. "Hey, there's the carrot pony! And there's the toothpaste-haired pony! And there's the toothpaste pony again... in the same shot!"

@Magic Food: Good point. I think there's a pegasus who looks an awful lot like Colgate, too, who keeps showing up. I know I always mistake Cloudkicker for Derpy if the shot's quick or I can't get a good look at her eyes.

Earth Ponies, did they really can be Badass Normal or Charles Atlas Superpower? They are magical to.
Their strength is propably had sorce in their passive magic. For example few earth ponies can pull train in Over the Barel.
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

Not to mention the ability to body check and stun a buffalo at the same time as pulling said train.
@Kegisak I think the pen tool (it has a pencil icon, but I can't see how there would be any difference in a computer program) is what I was using last night. I was hoping there might be some sort of trick to it, but I guess I'll just have to stick with the old fashioned way. I guess the colouring is at least a lot easier (I did all colouring in pencil crayon before GIMP).

^^The fic 'Dangerous Business', which I mentioned a page or so ago, gives earth ponies an ability they call 'standing firm', which lets them draw strength from the earth and become immovable. Even in the series, it seems like earth ponies make better farmers and such, implying they have a stronger connection with the earth than the other two breeds of pony.
