But you can't just put a book down after reading only the first chapter. That's not even enough to time to introduce the villain more often than not

Still doesn't solve the villain problem though.

At the moment, I'm trying to find all the media I can that has REALLY good villains. Books included

Wish I could help you there, but I'm coming up blank. I like a good villian as much as the next guy, but I don't pay that much attention to their presence when selecting a book.

Also, Discworld starts rather slowly - The Colour of Magic is all over the place. They get much better, though, and you don't have to start with it.

...that's got to be a record to renege on an (even temporary) departure. =|

Also, don't even bother with The Colour Of Magic. You can pick up Discworld at almost any point, and that book (in my opinion) sucks.
