I have a theory. This episode was indeed a turning point for the series.

First half of season 1 was pretty good, very enjoyable for a kids' show. Then along came Suited for Success, which BLEW OUR MINDS. They kept this up throughout season 1, and season 2, with maybe a couple messups. And with this episode, they truly went Beyond the Impossible. When Jayson Theissen said that season 2 would knock our socks off, he wasn't kidding. Hopefully the rest of the season continues the awesome!

Starting the new episode. Extrapolating purely on the Cold Open, I'm guessing Applejack doesn't come back because she didn't win first place, and is nursing a wounded pride.

I liked it in general (sorry, Ginger), although some of it was I got excited that they showed a story that had the train a lot in it on my dad's birthday, and he LOVES trains, so I thought that was a neat coincidence. My more specific opinions:

I liked the part with Derpy, and don't mind her voice. I don't think she's necessarily stupid, just EXTREMELY clumsy. She could still be "book smart" but maybe lack some common sense. From the way some people were talking, I almost expected her to have a MALE Simpleton Voice, but she didn't (maybe a bit of a girl's version of that voice, but not as much as I thought).
I thought Pinkie was funny, as I usually do, but I can certainly understand how viewers could easily find her to be as annoying as Applejack did (and Rarity as well, at the end). So I don't hold anything against the people who do. At least the characters acknowledge her as being potentially annoying.
I think that this story shows a good lesson for some of the fans. Mainly the ones who talk about "power levels" so much like a pony's physical or magical abilities determine their worth as a character. The "who could beat who" talk kind of bugs me because being able to beat up other ponies in a fight or in a race doesn't make the winner a better person overall. Some of this may be because I tend to pick my favorites (in general, not just ponies) based on how entertaining or interesting their personalities are, not because they have super abilities that outclass all the rest or get all the "crowning moments of awesome" where they do things like the Sonic Rainboom or fix a dam with magic. I do like Twilight and Rainbow Dash, but because of their personalities, not because of their abilities.

Ace: Pffft. I once used that argument for a book series I liked, which had the basis of "humanity wins the war against X" and the person was so livid at how they won even though the point was really the journey and the discovery.

For some reason, a lot of people (not referring to y'all) seem to really not take that argument well.

I know the plots will always be predictable, what I try and look for is an interesting variation on the plot, or interesting interactions to make up for it.

Whether this episode had it or not, is debatable.
