I'm just glad they kept the romance out of the mane cast. I'm not too worried about romance between side characters, but trying to work it into the primary cast would throw off the dynamics too much. And yeah, from an in-story perspective, this makes perfect sense. The CMC would naturally try to set up ponies they're relatively close to, which basically limits them to Big Macintosh, Rarity, and Cheerilee. Granted Rarity/BM and Rarity/Cheerilee would be hilarious, you just know Rarity wouldn't go along with their plans.

I have a feeling it won't be permanent. Like someone else said, probably a zany matchmaking episode with some moral that you can't force love.

...Makes me wonder what prompts the CMC to become matchmakers (other than the possibility of getting cutie marks). Maybe while making Hearts & Hooves cards for class they notice Cheerliee herself looks lonely and they want to help her with zany misadventures.

Although it won't happen, be kinda funny if either Mac or Cheerilee turned out to not be into the other gender.

....All this speculation is actually reminding me of a fanfic where the CMC played Matchmaker for Mac and Twilight. It was cute.

...And at the end of the episode Cheerliee will set Mac up with one of her ex-coltfriends, and they will at least be good friends, if not lovers.

I dunno, the status quo has been shaken up before. I can see the two being a couple as permanent.
