question: How could ANYPONY SLOW DISCORD DOWN?!?!

I got the impression from the Discord episodes that Luna and Celestia used to be ordinary fillys who discovered the Elements of Harmony and used them to defeat Discord. Then, being the great heroes of the land, they were probably elevated to a leadership role. How exactly they ended up as Alicorns I dunno though. Also, if they used the Elements to defeat Discord, who used the other 4 elements? Maybe they had a group of friends just like Twilight does.

Discord wasn't all that amazingly threatening to be honest. Rather than just use his powers to wipe out the opposition he gave them a fighting chance against him, and even let them try a free hit with the Elements.

And you could slow him down just by getting him in a conversation, the dude loves to hear himself talk.

By amusing him so he'd be too busy laughing to notice the Sisters charging their Friendship Laser?

I assumed they were always alicorns, but just lived in the countryside in peace before Discord fucked everything up.

I also figured that them being Alicorns allowed them to wield more than on element at once. (I figured they had about 3 each)

M Exactly, he's a force of nature, not a malevalant force, he doesn't have much direction, it's just whatever he feels like at the time, and prefers fun over pragmatism. Discord can actually be rather easy to distract/occupy.

I really dislike ascension fanon, for some reason. The girls didn't ascend when they Harmonied Discord, after all (and seriously, don't say 'THEY WILL' or something like that).

I guess they grew into their powers then.

The princesses were most likely always Alicorns, possibly existing since the beginning of time, but weren't old enough to realize deitydom until around when Discord took over.

Also, the only time we saw Discord acting all arrogant and sure of himself was during a time where he HONESTLY felt like he had all the cards and that there was NO chance of him losing. Once the mane cast started using the elements effectively, he became terrified.

If Celestia and Luna back then were wielding the elements, I can't imagine that he'd fuck around and give them a chance to use them.

Hehe, so, of course, exactly what he represents was his biggest downfall. Being stuck thinking about that one's gotta smart.

Hence their friends choosing to sacrifice themselves by distracting Discord long enough for the Sisters to fire the Friendship Laser, joining him in the Garden as statues.

He probably put up a fight, and odds are he didn't expect it, most likely the sisters came in unexpectedly and the power of the elements were unknown to him at the time. Who knows, he probably reigned unopposed he thought no matter what he couldn't be stopped.

It's really hard to pin down just how powerful Celestia and Luna are supposed to be. They needed the Elements to beat Discord obviously, so that means that, together, Twilight's group is more powerful.

Though I figure the Elements can only be used against an evil opponent.

He definitely seemed to know Celestia pretty well, so I'd guess there was a story there. Might be he was seen as a legitimate ruler for a while until he went off the deep end. They could have been friends at one point.

Well, his statue before he broke loose in the S2 pilot clearly showed him not in abject terror so he obviously was distracted and didn't see it coming.

Odds are, he's not a killer and dosen't want to break his toys. Chaos is no fun with no one to enjoy it/ suffer t.

@Ginger: But the princesses are some sort of godly beings as well. Would he really be able to just SNAP eliminate them like that? It's an interesting story, too bad it's unlikely to ever be expanded on in canon.

They might have had barely enough power to protect themselves.

He must've been distracted, probably challenged to perform an opera or something. At least he went out having fun.

Oh yeah, I figured they could at least do well enough to recieve a Curb-Stomp Battle from him (as opposed to instantaneous defeat like with normal ponies)

From what I think I understand of your thought process, I'm not at all surprised you feel that way.

Not this time though. I like to imagine the Princesses do something even more humiliating to Discord the second time around, like put his statue in a Palace art gallery with embarassing decorations and an even more silly title, like some kind of real-life 3D lolcat.
