@Red: For the unicorn at least, Twilight and Rarity said at the beginning that unicorn foals apparently have magical power surges or something. My assumption is that all foals can do that, and then it goes away as they mature a little. Sort of like how newborns have the ability to swallow and breathe at the same time, but most adults don't.

Yeah, most people seem to be taking it as a surge in magic. Still, Pound is crazy strong for a baby. Though I suppose it could be an EP magic surge coming through.

Why are people calling these babies adorable*, when (IIRC) they look like the baby in the carriage in MMDW? You remember it, don't you? The baby everyone thought was some kind of Hellspawn?

They were most CERTAINLY redesigned. Their heads are proportionatly smaller than in MMDW for one

They're differently proportioned (smaller heads), don't have those dead eyes, and are in general much more expressive. One of the MMDW baby's biggest problems was the fact that it looked more like a doll than a pony, it just sort of sat there, expressionless.

@Red Savant: My theory is that secondary characteristics that are not tribe-specific (strength, temperature resistance, etc) are available to all tribes and only when the pony has the right tribe gene would the characteristics' genes be transcribed differently - having the earth pony tribe-gene would transcribe the more potent version of the strength module. Pound Cake could just have an abundance of that module or some other weird mutations thanks to having a lineage that favors earth pony genetic makeup.

There was actually a side-by-side comparision of the twins next to the MMDW foal on Ponibooru. Unfortunatly the site is down at the moment. I kept looking for it anyway, though somehow I ended up watching a Lady Gaga song sung to the tune of the Flying Battery Zone from Sonic & Knuckles.

I do not know how this happened.

On the subject of "Baby Cakes, " my new theory of pony genetics: A new character is whatever effing race the writers want them to be. Doesn't have to make sense. Apparently having Pegasi or Unicorn blood anywhere in the family is enough to make every new birth a potential wildcard.

Which probably undoes all the "Earth Ponies are the lowest rung of pony society" theories right there.

It certainly seems that way. It's probably exceedingly rare for something like the Cakes' situation to happen though. It would be kinda neat to see some other characters with parentage like that, like if Scootaloo's parents were both Earth Ponies or Unicorns. That might explain her preference of the ground for travel. /headcanon

^Though it might also make race snobs very leery of allowing marrying of any kind - a unicorn marrying into an earth pony family could taint the line for generations.
